Buy a reasonably decent guitar to start with. If you go too cheap, you'll have more problems than not.

An easy-to-play, stay-in-tune guitar is essential. It makes learning so much easier and a lot more fun. It may cost a few more bucks, but it's well worth it.

It could also be helpful to buy a guitar with a cutaway so you can reach the higher frets easily.
