Chords are VERY IMPORTANT for any musician to know well and understand.

Most people don't lean enough about chords, especially guitar players. That's because most budding guitar players are more interested in learning how to play lead guitar. They want to play Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the water, Sunshine of Your Love and other lead guitar songs.

So they look for the tab on the internet (which is mostly wrong anyway) and try to learn from that. BIG MISTAKE!

Learning from tab is OK, but you have to have a balance. Learning things off tab should only be about 10% of your practice. There are far more important things to work on that picking things up from tab. Things that will turbo-boost your learning much faster than tab could ever do. Things like learning all you can about chords!

But NOT learning about chords will only make learning guitar take a LOT longer than it should.

Why? Simple… most of those lead solos are based on CHORDS! Professional guitarists play lead guitar solos based on chords rather than scales! So a good knowledge of chords is extremely important… especially if you want a good shortcut to learning to play guitar really well. And, of course, to save yourself a lot of time and frustration in the process.
