There is far too much made of modes, in my opinion. While understanding them can be handy, they tend to confuse people rather than enlighten them.

However, they are definitely worth learning about. And if you have the time for some serious study, they can be a viable way to learn about playing guitar. But I would advise learning the modes as chord-scales in a linear fashion, rather than single notes.
