The 3 Essentials To SUCCESSFULLY Learning How To
Play Guitar
There are three essentials to ensuring your
success at learning to play guitar. Acoustic or
electric, blues, rock, country, metal, jazz... it doesn't
matter. Whatever style of electric or acoustic guitar you
choose, you must master these 3 essentials.
If you don't, you will most likely fail. Or, at the
very least, you will add many unnecessary months and years to
your learning process.
Forget that. Choose to do it fast and do it right...
it's much more fun that way. :-)
#1: Avoid Developing Bad
Habits...
The 1st thing you need to know about learning how to play
guitar is how to use a guitar physically. You know... how to
hold the guitar, how to use your hands and fingers for maximum
efficiency etc. MOST beginners don't use their body, hands and
fingers properly. They have far too much tension and their
fingers are not in control... they flap all over the place.
You must be as relaxed as possible at all times when you
practice guitar and you must also ensure there is no excess
finger movement. Getting this wrong can stunt your opportunity
for reaching your full potential. Your technique will be lousy
and your chords changes and lead playing will also be sloppy
and sound very average. But who wants to be average? You want
to be the best you can, right?
If you want to give yourself the best chance of success at
learning how to play guitar, you must address this problem
right from the start... before bad habits have the chance to
develop. Be warned... they are very hard to fix after you have
leaned them.
The best way to learn about how to use your body
correctly and how to avoid bad habits is to buy a book! Yep...
not free... but by far the best way to take care of this
problem.

recommend.
#2: Learn About Chords
& Chord Progressions...
Chords are more important than anything else when learning
how to play music.. But most learn to play guitar chords
entirely the wrong way!
Learning chords is all about learning them in context of
how they work
together in songs. Learning them in groups is the way to
go. Those groups of chords are called "chord progressions."
MOST beginners learn chords one at a time in a totally
random and non-integrated fashion. A bad mistake than can cause
you have great difficulty in working out songs by ear. And that
is your goal... to work out your favorite songs just by
listening to them.
You need to learn to recognize chord progressions when you
hear them. Learning to hear a single chord is the slow way of
learning and is no help at all. But it's one of the biggest
mistake beginners make.
Always practice chords in groups of two, three, or four
chords together. Learn how they sound together and your guitar
playing learning process will be up to 10x faster than
most.
The best way to find out about chords and how chord
progressions work, is to get my "Guitar Chords" eCourse. It is
designed to show you how to learn guitar chords the right way
for maximum learning speed.
#3: Learn To Apply Your
Chord Knowledge To Songs...
The 3rd essential ingredient is to learn
songs. Lots of them.
But please, please, please... learn them in a methodical
integrated manner. In the context of "chord progressions."
Also, make sure you learn each song completely before moving
onto the next. Doing this provides amazing benefits you will
only learn about after you get to your 10th to 20th song. You
will start seeing how the chords to songs really work. You will
see the similarities. It will be MUCH EASIER for you to learn
songs by ear after you apply these principles.
You can absolutely slash your learning time and save
years of struggle, frustration and disappointment if you do it
this way. I should know. I am a professional guitar
teacher and did it all the wrong way for 20 years! Oh boy, if
only I had this information then.
This is the way I teach my personal students. It works. It
works extremely well. My students outperform students of other
teachers in my town by a factor of about 4 to 1. I have 10 year
olds that leave teenagers in the dust for versatility, quality
of sound and song and musical knowledge. That gives me a great
deal of satisfaction and pride.
It's a bit like the Tortoise and Hare principle. My system
forces you to use your brain and think before just rushing in.
It may take a bit more preparation and planning initially, but
in a short time the wannabe Hare will be eating your dust-cloud
never to see you again.
Think about it...
To learn songs you can buy a good song chord book with
well-crafted songs that utilize "chord progressions" in
creative and effective ways. This is a must.
Look, it doesn't matter whether you want to play metal,
thrash, jazz, blues, rock, or whatever... if you want to learn
how to play guitar to the best of your ability as soon as you
can, you MUST get these basic principles down. They are the
foundation for every style.
For help with learning to play specific songs... I
recommend Ben
Edwards and Jamorama.
