The best way to learn guitar is to go to a well-respected teacher who knows how to teach. There are many teachers that do not know how to teach. But in general, a teacher will guide you and help you develop all the basic skills.

When you go to a teacher he/she should get you to learn with a method book. Some use their own methods... don't use them. Not at the start, anyway. If you work with a method book, then at least you can follow on with it yourself if you leave your teacher for some reason. If you don't follow a systematic method, then you're going to waste a lot of time and money.

However, you can successfully teach yourself to play guitar online, or, through purchasing products from the internet.

My advice is to forget all the free sites because they are not focussed enough on what YOU really need to learn. And in effect, it takes you much longer to figure everything out and how to 'apply' what you learn.
