The best way to learn guitar is to go to a well-respected teacher who knows how to teach. There are many teachers that do not know how to teach. But in general, a teacher will guide you and help you develop all the basic skills.

When you go to a teacher he/she should get you to learn with a method book. Some use their own methods... don't use them. Not at the start, anyway. If you work with a method book, then at least you can follow on with it yourself if you leave your teacher for some reason. If you don't follow a systematic method, then you're going to waste a lot of time and money.

However, you can successfully teach yourself to play guitar online, or, through purchasing products from the internet.
