The Biggest Mistake Beginners Make
But first, let's look at the problems that arise if you don't learn the proper way to use
your hands and body to play guitar.
Don't Hit The Wall Because of Finger Disease!
There is a saying amongst guitarists. It's called "Hitting the
Wall".
Basically, it means you have reached a point where no matter what you do you cannot seem to make any
progress. It generally refers to a lack of technique and to having everything you play sound the
same.
There are a couple of main reasons why this happens:
- Finger-disease
- Gaps in your theory/music knowledge
Bad Playing Technique
When most people start learning guitar they have no clue about proper technique...
That causes them to develop bad habits that stunt their future growth and potential.
This comes about because of bad habits you have developed when learning to play guitar. Those
bad habits are what some call finger disease. I equate them with being ham-fisted and
clumsy.
It means your fingers are not at ease... not relaxed.
In fact, if you are having problems with getting up to speed and developing good technique, it can
usually be traced to tension somewhere in your body. You neck, stomach, arms, hands, fingers and legs
need to be relaxed.
However, most make the mistake of blaming something else. You may think you
just can't do it. That you're not cut out for playing guitar, or that it's some other problem.
The other very important thing to realize is that it is very difficult to change your bad habits once
they are established. It can take many months of highly-focussed practice and re-programming to correct
your bad habits.
You're better off to get this sorted right from the start.
