Transcribe! Slow Down Music
Software.
This is my favorite transcribing tool. Used to do this by
lifting a needle on and off 45 or LP records. This is a LOT
faster and you can save loops too.
Playing by ear is the ultimate skill to
develop. The best way to do that is to 'steal' your
favorite licks, runs and riffs from your favorite guitar
players directly off their music tracks, mp3's and video
clips.

Transcribing Tips
Most guitar solos are made up of simple phrases connected
together to make something more complicated.
Learning your favorite phrases is a great way to develop a
bag of tricks you can use when playing solos.
My suggestion is to learn phrases that work over Maj7
chords, Dom7 chords and min7th chords. That's because they are
the main sounds music is composed of.
All other chords generally fit into one of these catagories.
Maj, Dom and minor.
Of course, you can also learn complete solos as near to the
original as possible.
Using your ears is really important. Listen for timing,
bends, slides, vibrato, what strings are being used etc.
